Earthquake Solidarity Brew

Munich homebrewers and beer lovers got together to brew and share a series of solidarity beers to help raise money for those impacted by the devastating earthquakes that shook Turkey & Syria.

Brew. Drink. Donate.

As most of you are already aware, the strong earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria in February 2023 had devastating effects. They were one of the strongest seismic events ever recorded in the region, rupturing the ground itself, leveling entire buildings, and killing nearly 60,000 people, with over 120,000 others across Turkey and Syria left injured and helpless.

Many countries joined forces to support with rescue efforts, but with crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, and rural infrastructure heavily damaged, the situation there continued to be dire and many people were still in need of support.

In solidarity with those that were affected, Hopsylvania brewed and shared a couple of 20L batches of artisanal beer in exchange for donations, and invited any homebrewers in or around Munich to join in lending a helping brewer’s hand.

As homebrewers we did it before for similar causes back in 2019 and then in 2022, so we hoped to do it again and raise as much as we could, as soon as we could. Here's what brewers had to do:

  1. Think of a beer they wanted to brew
  2. Sign up via a form on this page
  3. Purchase their own ingredients
  4. Brew and package their beer
  5. Have it ready by May 28th, 2023
  6. Bring it to the venue

There was no official recipe list and no guidelines, so everyone just let their creativity guide them. Once our beers were ready, we came together to share them with the local community where people drank them in exchange for donations. That's when we also compared brews, shared notes, and learned from each other's experience, all while also raising money for charity.

Groundwork Fundraiser

Thursday, June 1st, 2023

We shared our beers with the local community at a special fundraising event hosted by HopDog, a strong supporter of the homebrewing scene and a pillar for such solidarity causes. Since as homebrewers we couldn't technically sell our beers, we asked that for every solidarity beer that was drank people also made a payment in the form of a donation in our donation box at the bar. These contributions provided much needed support and 100% of the proceeds went towards official humanitarian relief efforts in Turkey and Syria!

Beer menu

The participating brewers put a lot of passion, time, and effort into making some terrific beers for people to try. These beers were all served on tap exclusively at the venue in exchange for donations, and when they were gone they were gone for good!
